Education

Students of Fernley are under the jurisdiction of the Lyon County School District. Schools located in Fernley include Cottonwood Elementary School, East Valley Elementary School, Fernley Elementary School, Fernley Intermediate School and Fernley High School. Fernley's newest school scheduled to open December 2010 is Silverland Middle School. Currently, Fernley Christian School is the only parochial school located in the city of Fernley. High school graduates and adult learners looking to continue their educational endeavors in a collegiate setting may do so at Truckee Meadows Community College, Western Nevada Community College and University of Nevada-Reno, among a few others located outside Fernley.

Economy & Job Market

Business development has flourished in Fernley since its agricultural and ranching days in the early 1900s, the opening of the Nevada Cement Company in 1965, and the establishment of the community's first Industrial Park in the 1980s. Presently, Fernley proudly serves as the home of many reputable companies and facilities including the order fulfillment center for Amazon.com, Allied Signal, UPS Worldwide Logistics (Honeywell), Sherwin Williams Paint, and Trex Inc., among many others. In recent years Fernley has seen the arrival of Super Wal-Mart, Lowe's, Frontier Fun Center—a 21 lane state of the art bowling center, Renown Health Urgent Care & Medical Group, Anytime Fitness and numerous eateries. Additionally, Fernley is located just a short 30 minute drive to the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area, where many more employment opportunities are available for residents.

Parks & Recreation

Fernley's Parks and Recreations Department maintains 10 parks with one more currently under construction: Cloverland Park; Eagle's Nest Park; Green Valley Park; In-Town Park, which also includes the Fernley Skate Park; Johnson Memorial Park; Millennium Park; Ponderosa Park; River Ranch Park; Out of Town Park, home of our rodeo arena; and Silverland Park. Sports fields for soccer, softball, baseball, football and tennis courts are also available for the benefit of Fernley's active residents and many organized youth and adult leagues. Fernley Management Wildlife Area is also located nearby and features campgrounds, hiking trails and hunting areas. Golf is provided by the 18-hole Desert Lakes Golf Course. Other popular activities include off-roading on a professional ATV track, visiting the Reno/Fernley Raceway, fishing at Lake Tahoe, Pyramid Lake, Walker Lake, Lahontan Reservoir and along the Truckee River.
